Dual Degree Options

MHA/MD recipients may choose to use the dual degree to enhance their clinical practice of medicine or as the means to a career in hospital management or health policy. The program joins the MD curriculum along with a nationally prominent masters program in health administration. This MHA/MD degree program is the first of its kind in Ohio, and one of only a few in the nation.

The two degrees would normally require six years if taken separately, but efficiencies in scheduling and the ability to count some work toward both degrees mean that the degrees can be completed within five years of beginning study, so that both degrees are received at the same graduation. Both the MD and MHA are fully accredited by their respective accrediting agencies.

In the typical case the student will begin study in the medical curriculum, completing the first and second years of medical school and Step 1 of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE).

The student then takes a year of full time graduate study in the MHA curriculum. After the full time MHA year, the student rejoins the medical curriculum for Med III, the first intensively clinical year.

During the final Med IV year, concurrent with the Med IV electives and clinical rotations, the student will complete an integrative project (and any remaining required course work for the MHA, if necessary).

Because the MD/MHA student receives 22 graduate credit hours for work completed in the MD curriculum, all scheduled courses for the MHA can usually be completed in one academic year, leaving only the integrative project to be done after rejoining the MD curriculum.

The MHA requires one prerequisite course in accounting. Students who have not already met the prerequisite must take a course in the summer following either Med I or Med II in order to complete the program as shown.

Visit the College of Medicine web site for more information on the MD degree.
