When combined with social and ethical concerns that transcend the usual concept of an industry, health care presents unique challenges to management and the law. In recognition of these challenging opportunities, The Ohio State University has established a joint program leading to MHA/JD or MPH/JD degrees.

Graduates are expected to assume leading positions in a variety of settings, including law firms, management of health care delivery, counsel to health care organizations, and policy-related positions in both the public and private sectors.

By pursuing the two degrees simultaneously the student can take advantage of scheduling efficiencies and complete both degrees in four academic years, rather than the five academic years that would ordinarily be required. The efficiencies are possible through the use of courses for the MHA in meeting elective hours for the JD, and vice versa. In addition to this mechanical efficiency, the joint program may enhance the student’s experience by making the complex interrelationships of law and management more apparent.

The MHA/JD or JD/MPH program is quite simple in structure. The student takes one year of full-time course work in each program, in either order (i.e., one year of JD followed by one year of MHA or vice versa). In the remaining two academic years, the student may take law and graduate course work simultaneously.

The only major consideration is the practical complexity introduced by the fact that the law degree is taught in semesters, while the graduate courses are taught on the quarter system.
