Financing Your Education

Students admitted to our degree programs are automatically considered for any available scholarships, traineeships or graduate associate positions in the College. Most of these are awarded on the basis of merit. The College of Public Health admissions staff does its best to help students finance their education. However, funding is usually not available for international students pursuing master's degrees. With the college located in a large city, there are part-time work opportunities with many health-related employers.

The college makes every effort to provide funding for PhD students through fellowship competitions and teaching associateships. There are also special funding opportunities for doctoral work related to the Center for Health Outcomes Policy and Evaluation Studies.

University Fellowships

The Ohio State University Graduate School awards University Fellowships, which cover tuition and a monthly stipend, to applicants competitively on the basis of academic merit. Fellowships do not require any work obligation on the part of the student (in fact, the student is prohibited from having other employment during the period of a fellowship appointment). Applicants who wish to be considered for fellowships must indicate this on their Graduate School Admission Application. Your completed application file, including all supporting documents, must be received by Jan. 15 for domestic applicants or the last business day of November for international applicants in order to be eligible for the fellowship competition.

Graduate Associates

The College of Public Health awards a small number of graduate associate positions, which include both tuition and a stipend, primarily on the basis of academic merit. Entering students are automatically considered for these positions, which require approximately 20 hours of work per week in some instructional or research support role in the College. In addition, faculty members may individually offer graduate associate positions to students, funded by sponsored research or other projects. In these instances, the faculty review the files of all students and choose the best match for the position. Thus it is quite helpful for your personal statement to indicate clearly your interests and any experience you may have had in research or instructional activities, so that the faculty will be aware of your background.

Public health students may also apply directly for graduate associate positions elsewhere on campus. In addition, our University Libraries hire graduate administrative associates in a variety of capacities, and several areas hire graduate associates to serve as advisers to incoming undergraduates.

Likewise, positions may be available in offices devoted to international education and ethnic student services, or in university health, wellness, or career services. Student service areas also employ part-time help. Students are encouraged to learn as much as possible about the university and to contact the appropriate offices to pursue such funding opportunities.

Other Sources

As noted above, students are automatically considered for any sources of funds available through the College of Public Health, and no further application is necessary. Information on other sources, including student loans, scholarships, and employment on- and off-campus is available at the Office of Student Financial Aid website.

For additional information on these sources, as well as financial aid counseling and needs analysis, contact the Office of Student Financial Aid.
