OCPHP PRACTITIONER DEVELOPS PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT CONTEST FOR KIDS:
Dr. Prabu David, evaluation specialist at the College's Ohio Center for Public Health Preparedness and associate professor in OSU's School of Communication, recently created a video contest for middle- and high-school students to create public service announcements. The contest, which is called HealthFlix and will launch in April, provides an opportunity for young filmmakers and videographers to create commercials promoting health and safety. The goal is to find fresh PSAs that speak to traditional audiences in new ways and expose new audiences to a bold, unique approach to promoting health and safety. For more info >

2008 Public Health Preparedness Summit: Atlanta, GA – February 19-22
Dr. Sharon A.R. Stanley, OCPHP Program Director, and Ms. Cheryl L. Engle, Learning Environment Manager, presented a session titled “Embracing the Distance: Blended Learning Challenges & Solutions in Preparedness".
Ms. Niki Lemin, Program Manager, poster presentation titled “Defining the Emergency Response Roles of Environmental Health Specialists in Northwest Ohio”.
The 2008 Public Health Preparedness Summit is the nation's largest conference for public health and emergency preparedness professionals. The third annual Summit provides attendees the opportunity to participate in cutting-edge workshops, interactive sessions, and round table discussions that are designed to enhance knowledge, increase professional networks, and leave participants “inspired.” We are sure hoping for the latter in light of the current decreasing funding for public health preparedness!
Partners in Emergency Preparedness Conference: Tacoma, WA – April 2-3
Dr. Anne L. Drabczyk, Research Specialist, is an invited Plenary Speaker at the Partners in Emergency Preparedness Conference in Tacoma, Washington on April 2, 2008. The plenary session topic title is "Appreciative Inquiry Research and Leadership: Preparing All-Hazard Practitioners for the Future that is Now.” The Partners in Emergency Preparedness Conference is the largest and most successful regional emergency preparedness conference in the Pacific Northwest. Partners in Emergency Preparedness annually hosts over 500 people representing business, schools, government, the nonprofit sector, emergency management professionals, and volunteer organizations.
Homeland Security/Defense Education Consortium Summit: University of Maryland – March 18-19
Dr. Sharon A. R. Stanley, OCPHP Program Director, will be presenting a session titled “Room to Grow – Incubating Competency Based Training for Busy Practitioners” at the 2nd Annual Homeland Defense and Security Education Summit, “Innovation in Homeland Defense and Security Education” in University College at the University of Maryland, March 18-19.
Kent State Presidential Symposium On Research – April 22
Dr. Sharon A. R. Stanley, OCPHP Program Director, will be presenting a session on “Hypervigilance and Public Health Preparedness Workforce-Population Effects” at the Presidential Symposium on Research: Hypervigilance, Fact, Fiction, or Fault? on April 22 at the Kent State Student Center.
Ohio Environmental Health Association Annual Education Conference – April 23
Ms. Niki Lemin, Program Manager, will be presenting a session “What Am I Doing Here? The Role of Environmental Health During Emergency Response” at the Ohio Environmental Health Association Annual Education Conference on April 23 in Columbus, OH.
OCPHP PROGRAM MANAGER INVITED TO BE AN EPHLI MENTOR
Ms. Niki Lemin, Program Manager, has accepted an invitation to mentor a team in Cohort IV of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Environmental Public Health Leadership Institute (EPHLI). Lemin is a former EPHLI scholar (Cohort II), and completed a team project titled “Defining the Emergency Response Roles of Environmental Health Specialists in Northwest Ohio.” EPHLI is a one-year program that includes seminars, workshops, special projects and individual study. Each year up to 30 practicing environmental public-health professionals are admitted to the program. The institute was developed to strengthen the country’s environmental public health system by enhancing the leadership capabilities of state and local environmental public health specialists. OCPHP PROGRAM DIRECTOR AWARDED STAFF DEVELOPMENT GRANT
Dr. Sharon A. R. Stanley, OCPHP Program Director, has been awarded a $500 Staff Development Grant by the OSU Office of Human Resources for 2008. Stanley's grant has been earmarked for research being conducted to create regional planning models for mass fatality management in catastrophic surge. Her study is in partnership with the Naval Postgraduate School, Center for Homeland Defense and Security in Monterey, Calif., and the current CDC Cooperative Agreement.

Dr. Anne Drabczyk, research specialist in the Ohio Center for Public Health Preparedness, was recently named the assistant managing editor of the Journal of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, after being a peer reviewer on its editorial board for two years.

OCPHP PREPAREDNESS COURSE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH PRACTITIONERS - SPRING 2008
Now, more than ever, public health professionals are the front line force for protecting, promoting, and restoring the people’s health. “Public Health Preparedness for Environmental Health Sciences”is designed to provide a view of disaster management as it applies to public health, specifically focusing on environmental health issues. Instructors Stephan Ruckman, R.S., MPH, and J. Mac Crawford, R.N., PhD, will also address the emergence of many new concerns and threats.
