The Division of Environmental Health Sciences provides a cornerstone to public health through multidisciplinary research, training, and practice that is focused on chemical, physical, and biological agents in the environment that influence human health.  Its scope is broad, encompassing both the environmental and biological processes and mechanisms underlying human disease and prevention. 

Through discoveries of these processes and mechanisms, Environmental Health Sciences is able to identify strategies for disease prevention and health promotion.  It spans the continuum from the agents’ source to environmental contamination, human exposure and dose, through to the molecular interactions that result in toxicity.  It is comprehensive in its inclusion of both individual and population-level susceptibility and intervention factors that modify the cascade of events that ultimately lead to disease and/or its prevention. 

Research and training in environmental health sciences occurs through two degree programs, the Ph.D. and MS.  In addition, within the MPH curriculum, students can elect to emphasize focused training in environmental health sciences.
