Future Public Health Workforce
The Office supports students in several ways:
- Public Health Grand Rounds is a monthly informational seminar series that addresses a public health preparedness issues of interest to students, practitioners and the OSU community.
- The Public Health Dialogue is a new initiative that invites students from health sciences schools to discuss current events and their public health implications. These facilitated conversations focus on a particular event or situation; a field expert is available to offer factual guidance when necessary. The purpose is to encourage different and unique perspectives that result in shared insights that can impact public health policy, research, and practice now and into the future.
- All three of our major projects have provided students with practice placement opportunities that are related to the mission of the Office. Links have also been made between community agencies and students whose interests match the needs of the agency. Past practice placement projects have included an investigation into and recommendations for a student volunteer corps, food biosecurity & school cafeterias, personal and office emergency kits, and emergency preparedness training for intentional food poisoning at an outdoor event. New practice placements are posted each Spring. New practice placement opportunities are posted for Summer 2006!
- Academic courses related to public health preparedness issues currently include practice-based courses for five individual disciplines, a community emergency response team training, and a bioterrorism and emergency competencies seminar.
